I really think I have lost the plot. When a 4.0 Supercharged Jaguar XJR V8 came up for £50, something came loose in my brain.

Unfortunately, the big end has gone and it‘s probably a Nikasil engine.

It is however, everything I need dimension wise to mock up this Haynes Roadster style build.

The Jaguar AJ-V8 is a compact 32V quad cam engine introduced in 1997. It replaced the V12 that went before it. The Jaguar V12 was famed for being the smoothest engine ever made. The new engine obviously had a tough act to follow.

The AJ-V8 is available in many guises from 3.2 to 5.0Litre.

The model engine I have is from a Aug 1998 – Feb 1999 Jaguar XJR. It’s a AJ26S with 370hp. It has an Eaton Supercharger (modified Roots type). The supercharged engine does not have the variable valve timing of the standard engine. The engine has Nikasil liners and these failed due to a reaction with modern high-sulphur petrol. Later models had steel liners and I understand that it is possible to get steel liners for Nikasil models.

The Liners aren’t the only problem. The XKR has an extra radiator and coolant pump system for the inter-cooler. It has an extra oil cooler. The engine management system is linked to the automatic gearbox. It needs dual fuel pumps that are also linked to the management system. With all the extra kit comes hoses, wiring looms, mounting brackets etc.

I will keep a eye on the auction sites, but I have a feeling I might be going for a non-supercharged bike carburetor set-up.

update: This build will be getting either a complete Megasquirt ECU or an EDIS 8 / megasquirt hybrid ignition and injection system. A similar system on a US engine produced 465BHP from a standard engine – plus 48mpg!
